The selected students had to be 'the right people' to be educated. They had to:
- ... represent certain professional groups defined by CASLE
- ... be (at least nearly) qualified and able/willing to continue their work through the medium of Aanaar Saami after CASLE
- ... represent particular age groups. For example, no young students were accepted because they would not necessarily have a clear vision of their forthcoming working life. On the other hand, CASLE students had to be young enough to stay in the labour market at least 8 to 10 years after CASLE. This was due to the high investment put into each CASLE student position
- ... have a proven ability to learn other languages, i.e. they had to be minimally bilingual already
- ... be motivated to work with Aanaar Saami as well as to stay in the Aanaar area
